Disability History and Police liaison 26/11/14

This meeting was on Disability History, telling your story and Disability Liaison with the Police.

worldaidsdayiconThis meeting was split into three parts:

  1. A talk from Aileen Norbury, Disability Liaison Officer B&H Police
  2. A workshop on Disability History led by Christine Lawrence
  3. A story telling workshop led by Liz Porter.

The group were given an overview of hate crime reporting and highlighted issues around the clarity of who the Disability Liaison Officers were in the area and the need for accessible formats on materials around hate crime reporting. The group were successful in matching many historical events impacting on disabled people to the timeline and were creative in imaging life for a made-up middle aged woman with epilepsy through the ages. The group also contributed their own stories around incidents, activities and adventures in their lives which can be seen in the minutes and also on a dedicated page here.

Aileen Norbury has come back as requested with the list of Safe Spaces we mentioned in the meeting:
It mentions people with learning disabilities but is a safe space for all, if for example you were victim to a hate crime. We are reminded that to report hate crime, if it is urgent, call 999 if not call 101 or the mobile number of a police disability liaison officer such as Aileen: 07768776813 The full list of Disability Liaison Officers in the area for you to contact will follow shortly.
